Cable Railing kit 9/20/04

This is another customer installed kit. His choice of color and the cable for the setting near the water speak for itself. The use of side mounts to expand the useable deck surface is easily seen. This is a fairly normal rectangular deck with two outside corners with two posts each, two end posts both of them set off the house about 3-1/2" so a simple CA1010 cable assembly can be used. His post placement on the sides was nearly 5 ft. center to center so we used pickets on the sides to act as cable "Spreaders" to help keep the cable together should a side load occur. Notice the use of the bottom rail just above the deck surface. We like this because it does several things: serves as a rail to put your feet on if that ever happens, saves about 2 cables (cost is about even) and not only reduces the load on the end posts (less cables), but creates less of a bending area for the end posts since it is 4" above the deck and reduces the amount of post exposed to cable.
