Drill bits for use when drilling holes in wood or metal posts

Drill Bits for wooden posts

When drilling your holes in all posts you will either use a drillpress in a shop environment or drill them on the job site most likely after the posts are installed. For on site use we use a jig made easily that uses a "Long" drill bit that will go through the jig and pass completly through the 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 post post. Other uses for drills on wooden posts are enlarging the end post for fittings and for counter boring the smaller cable holes for the stainless sleeves in applications where the cable makes a turn as it comes out of a post such as in 45 and 90 deg. turns on the deck and with stairways. There is an issue with 45 deg. or less angles where two posts are used that you will need to call us before installing the posts.

Drill bit for metal

Since metal posts are almost always smaller in size than wooden ones normal length drill bits will work fine, but we found that especially with aluminum posts clean holes are a must for the grommets to work if one wants to use grommets to protect the edges of the holes for the cable. We found that a drill bit called a "Bullet Point" makes an almost burr free hole in our aluminum posts and we stock these in a 3/8" diameter which is the size hole for the grommets we use for 1/8 and 3/16" cable. In some cases grommets are not used, but you still want a clean hole. If so we recommend that you use a "Bullet Point" bit of the size required.
