Cable railing done with wooden frame on custom home in Gig Harbor, WA.

This deck and railing is part of a custom home with a lot of specialty woodwork on the inside. That thought was taken outside as you can
see from the shot of the house to include the wooden railings on the deck with cable infills for a natural look since it is built on a
wooded bluff overlooking Puget Sound to the East and Mt. Rainier as you can see in one of the photos. The deck is a fairly standard "U"
shape and the railing follows that with a stairway at both ends. In this case a 2x6 was used for the top rail and a 2x4 on edge under the
top rail making a very solid top rail. We used 9 cables in this case since we wanted to stay in the 3" range for cable centers vertically
in a 36" high railing which is code for this area.
We have set photos in a reduced size to fit two side by side. In most cases if they have a colored (usually blue, depends on your settings)
border you can click on any photo to take you to a larger version to see more detail. Use the "Back" button in the upper left of your screen
to return to this page from the enlarged photo.
The links at the top or bottom will take you back to the Home Page or Cable Thumbnail page.

Note: The "Even Larger Photo" links just below all photos are nice to see more detail, but consider the loading time. Once there, a small icon
in lower right of photo is another link to the really big photo (at least in our browser). Appreciate viewers comments on use of size of
photos.
The following photos show more of the same job. The cable is less maintenance and allows the breeze to flow easily with out any hotspots
on the deck from the sun, but of course is less of a windbreak for those needing it. You can see the use of wooden pickets on the stairway
areas. This was done to simplify the stairs since pickets and framing for them can be installed more easily and they are not in the vision
area. The frame fits in well and the cable allows a great view of the surroundings. You can keep the squeegee in the closet, no glass to clean on this job.

Look closely in the right photo below and you can see Mt. Rainier to the east. Photo to the left shows installing one of the
stainless sleeves we use for corners to prevent the cable from cutting the wood.

Photo to the left above shows (better to view in the larger photos) one of the stainless sleeves being installed by Ernie in a corner posts
using a piece of scrap cable as a guide so the sleeve stays straight in the drilled hole and won't fill with wood chips.
