This is another of our projects where we used a heavy aluminum frame normally used for glass or pickets and modified the posts to use cable. Two gates and a short wall section which were a last minute add will be installed within days to enclose the deck for pets, children, etc. This system was designed with 8 cables each of which run the full length of the railing which is approx. 97 linear ft. There are two 90 degree turns. We start with cable fittings at the end posts and turnbuckles near the middle of the system as the photos show. Cable is 1/8" 1 x 19 stainless and all fittings are all marine quality stainless. Finished system in this application allows warm summer breezes to flow over the deck and eliminate the need to wash glass frequently due to salt spray and dew on the glass which speeds up the collection of dust. We have set photos in a reduced size to fit two side by side or as needed. You can click on any photo to take you to a larger version to see more detail. The two photos below show an end post being worked on. The one on the left shows our tool layout to cut and field swage a threaded stud on the cable. The photo on the right shows how we in this case mark the cut point on the cable by simply pulling the cable tight and using a magic marker to mark the cable.

The photo below on the left shows how we set up the turnbuckles near the middle of the system. Some care needs to be taken here when cutting the cable at the endposts to allow proper placement of the turnbuckles in the space available. The second photo shows how two posts are used at a corner to allow the cable to smoothly make the 90 degree turn.

The photo below on the left shows a gate welded from the same post material. We used stainless hinges and an aluminum latch. The cable fittings were installed on the inside of the tubular extrusion of the gate and post so they wouldn't interfere with the hinge or latch side by filling up the swing clearance space needed. Photo on right shows a view to the southwest after table and flowers were added. A beautiful place to spend a quiet afternoon.
