Ordering information

You can order the cable assemblies in basically two (2) ways.

1.You can order assemblies from the Price Sheet(s) which have one end factory installed and one to be installed in the field which we think is the better way to do the cable in the majority of cases. In this case we supply the cable usually one or two ft. longer than your measured length to make sure you have enough to hold onto as you pull tight to mark the cut point on the cable. The cut point on the cable varies with post thickness and end fitting style. Keep in mind that short is not good in the cable business.

2. Order the same assemblies, but specify that we provide the assemblies with BOTH ENDS ends factory swaged which requires some precise measurements from you that determine how long the overall assembly is with the ends installed. With this second method of ordering you are responsible for the basic measurement and how much you want us to add for the washers, nuts, etc. Normally with assemblies such as the CA1010 you would want 1/2" of threads showing beyond the end post on each threaded end which is enough for the hardware to get started and provides a little leeway with the finished product. An additional page shows some sample measurements that we would need from you. We would prefer that you actually copy this sheet and add your own dimensions so they are easy to understand

We like the first option because:

A. You determine your own cable length (you ordered one or more of the basic assemblies longer than you need) after you have pulled the cable through all the posts. You can pull them all through, make sure things are OK, slightly tension the cable by hand, mark and cut each cable to your needed length and install the fitting.

B. You can run the cable through smaller holes in all but the end posts in wood or metal since you don't have to run the larger end fittings through all the holes. This varies a bit if you are using grommets in metal posts.

C. On wooden systems, you can run the cable through our stainless sleeves where the cable makes an angle out of a post such as a corner or stairway. The inside diameter of these is too small to let the fittings pass through. This is true with both 1/8" and 3/16" cable and fittings.

D. On metal systems it is the only way to be able to use normal grommets to protect the surface at the edges of the hole. They keep the cable from rubbing on the edge of the hole and also reduce the movement of the cable in the hole in normal use. We use these grommets on all of our aluminum systems shown on the site.

E. Measuring is pretty tough especially on curved units or around corners which makes the field installed fitting an obvious choice because you can easily measure and install the end fitting yourself and keep things much more simple. When measuring for a completely finished assembly you have to measure carefully and always remember to add the little bit extra in addition to your actual measurements. You are responsible for those dimensions. Errors can be expensive. Even we get a little nervous doing our own finished dimensions unless it is a very simple system.
