Railing parts for 2 different sizes of systems
The parts shown above are from two different brands of railings. The left is an 1-1/2" post and is a continuous top rail style. The right system has a larger 2-3/8" post and either a flat-top continuous top rail or a round intermittent top rail. Both can be used on the same size, but different height post. The photo below shows three different brands of posts and the basic method for attaching the bottom and or top horizontal. The continuous top rail just sits on the top of the post. The intermittent style is attached to the side of the post by a clip or picket as shown. Some methods are better for certain jobs and some are easier for the first and or one time user such as a homeowner doing his own installation which we see a lot of locally.
