This application was on a waterproof deck that had a commonly flashed upper edge. We spaced the post off the deck with a solid aluminum block to clear the edge flashing after adding flashing to the rim joist to carry any water into the gutter.
Note the two hole plugs in the left side of the base of the post. We had this engineered for a commercial project so feel very comfortable with use on residential projects. Rim joist vertical height and thickness is an issue to make a good mounting surface. We have had to go to a 4 bolt flange when using stainless side mounted posts when there were issues with the rimjoist.
